Breakbone DanceCo. is celebrating 10 Years of their signature full length and highly theatrical concept works that delve into the less frequented territories of human nature to find both strength and fragility. Known for an audaciously full throttled, emotionally charged, & highly physical performing style, Breakbone has created a diverse range of works that may actually surprise the audiences and critics of today's Dance Community of Chicago:
- From performing on a rooftop with a nightmarish search for love (On Rooftop 1996),
- To submersion underwater in a surrealistic absurd cabaret with a cast that performs dance, aerial tricks and tangos with a woman contemplating suicide (Undertow 1997).
- Fleeting Smile, was performed in 1997, and featured elaborate 1920's style gowns, a diverse cast of 7 performers, and a stage covered entirely with dry leaves.
- Two narrative dance-theater works, Still Water and Dust on her Tongue (1997, 1998) produced haunting performances to the writing of Guatemalan poet Rodrigo Rey Rosa.
- 1998 produced Box about one man's liberation from his self imposed isolation.
- Breakbone broke new ground by creating and codifying The Bodyslam Technique for their socio-political commentary work Logotype v2.1 (2001/2003) and also set the standard for the two-week performance run in dance.
- The award-winning performances of ONE (2002/2005) exposed the dark hidden secrets of human nature and garnered the company with two Outstanding Achievement Awards.
- Breakbone's most formidable work to date, Deadtech (2004), with a cast of 25 performers, featured a mechanoid survivor from a destroyed post-apocalyptic world where images of the past teach humanity and ultimate loss.
- Fearlessly delving into uncharted areas and issues-oriented content, Breakbone created héroïne- A Woman's Tale (2006), an experimental dance opera, portraying the life struggle of one woman's survival from sexual abuse.
- héroïne was also an unprecedented 3-week run and anchored The Heroine Project - a 6 month long celebration of the artistic female voice.
- And finally, the year 2007, marks Breakbone's 10th Year celebration culminating all our experience and creative vitality in presenting Atalee Judy in Visions of Light.
You could say we have been around the block. We have been consistently creating full evening thematic works that challenge audiences with our strong, bold, and often times, unconventional statements. We favor exploring the fascinating, dark and uncomfortable areas of our own existence versus solely entertaining on an aesthetic level. We work hard to create a total concept work that transcends contrivances and holds the audiences in a world especially created for them so they can sink their teeth in. Much like a movie or a theatrical play - we mold our performances to have drama, dynamics, continuity and emotional dialogue. "If you're one who likes drama, horror, morbid comedy, noir, documentaries, and action films, then you have found the right place with us. Love stories, happy comedies, fluffy romance, and the politically correct - seek your entertainment elsewhere."
